With 2025 behind us, it’s time to look forward to what 2026 has to offer. Whether you’re familiar with astrology or not, according to the 12-part Chinese zodiac cycle, 2026 is the year of the Fire Horse. What does this mean, exactly? In short, the year of the Fire Horse is all about bold action and ambition. With this in mind, we believe 2026 is your year of adventure.

The year of finally booking that trip you’ve been dreaming about. The year of exploring new destinations with friends. The year of saying yes to getting out there and experiencing somewhere different.

But where to start? We've got some suggestions.

Epic road trips

Nothing says adventure quite like a road trip off the beaten track in the heart of Namibia, with nothing but a car full of friends, the stretch of rugged landscape before you, and a paper map to lead the way. Off-grid in the world’s oldest desert, cruising from the dry-belly terrain of Windhoek, past the 120-million-year-old granite peaks of Spitzkoppe, into the bowl-shaped Messum Crater, and sleeping amongst the wildlife of Botswana.

Faltering signal, desert and infinite blue skies surrounding you, no other humans for days, every turn met by a roaming animal or picturesque sunset. Sometimes the most unforgettable of adventures happen when taking the road less travelled.

Mountain retreats

Adventure isn’t always fast paced, it often comes in the form of slowing down and taking the time to pause. Head to the charming village of Adelboden in Switzerland. Stay at the Brecon Hotel, known for its 1970s interiors and unrivalled views of the surrounding Bernese Oberland. Here, you'll take in the surroundings from your balcony whilst catching up on work or leafing through a new book, refresh your senses at the spa, and enjoy a kafi crème by the pool.

And when you are ready to head out, depending on the time of year, the options are plenty. During the colder months, head to the slopes for skiing and snowboarding. During the warmer months, take the 4.5 hour hike to Engstligen Falls, or head down into Adelboden to grab a coffee from the Expressionist Cafe and explore the historic landmarks, such as the church which has stood in the village since 1433.

City to summit

Adventure is varied. One moment you could be scaling a mountain for panoramic views and the next you could be exploring local spots in a bustling city. If this sounds like it’s for you, make your first stop South Africa’s Cape Town.

In this vibrant capital, start your day with a swim at Maiden’s Cove Tidal pool against the endless gaze of the Atlantic Ocean. From there, head into the city to grab breakfast at Pauline’s Coffee Shop, a local favourite. You’ll need the energy before you head to the foot of Lion’s Head Mountain, where you’ll hike to the top for a bird’s-eye view of the city below. For sundowners, walk along Ocean View Road until you hit Camp's Bay's 'hidden' location: The Rock. Cold ones cracked. Flaming sunset hitting the waves. A day never to be forgotten.
