Running a marathon at the highest altitude on Earth: Joshua Patterson hits new World Record

Coined the ‘Zombie Volcano’ due to its ongoing signs of unrest over the last 250,000 years, Bolivia’s Cerro Uturunco is 6,008 metres of intricate lava domes and flows. Josh’s challenge? To run a marathon across it at the highest altitude ever recorded.

Even before stepping up to the start line, Bolivia itself set the tone for a unique and unforgettable experience. On the first night, Josh slept just metres away from a witch market and one of Bolivia’s most notorious prisons. To top it off: he saw the country beat Brazil in the World Cup Qualifiers for the first time in 16 years, paving the way for more good fortune to follow.

With a route starting West of Quetena Grande heading towards Campamento Minero Uturuncu, the journey was tough. Marked by steep inclines and rugged terrain as far as the eye can see, the landscape didn’t let up, and neither did the altitudes.

Battling through oxygen levels that dropped by half, limited water supplies, temperatures of -16 °C, and a subconscious voice urging surrender at every turn, the finish line was met in record time.

"History has been written once again, something I’m incredibly proud to say. Life is short, I’ve seen how quickly it can change, or be taken from you. This one is for the people who are no longer here. I intend on making it count until the day I no longer can."
