Weekly rituals: how to spend your 5-9 before and after your 9-5

“What good shall I do today?”

Benjamin Franklin would jump out of bed each day and ask himself this very question.

You’ll find Anna Wintour out on the court playing tennis every morning as a non-negotiable. Charles Dickens went on daily three-hour walks during his writing periods.

These are what we like to call: rituals. Habits that bring purpose to our lives outside of work.

How rituals show up for different people:

Personal growth

Prioritising our other interests, whether that’s fitness, creativity, hobbies, travel, or relationships. Having a breadth of focuses ramps up personal development as a whole, nurturing greater curiosity and perspective in all aspects of life.

In the Stubble & Co team, we have:

  • Eliz involved with Gorp Girls, a women's collective focusing on wellness and nature
  • Lewis gearing up to train for the London Marathon 2027
  • Eve studying for an Art Director course
  • Alex running a book club in London
  • Three people on a rooftop court with a city skyline in the background

Mental and physical wellbeing

Before and after work, staying consistent with habits that calm the nervous system. This looks like:

  • Reading every night before bed instead of doom scrolling to lower the heart rate and level the mind. A one-way ticket to better sleep.
  • Playing your favourite sport acts as a natural mood booster for the morning or a way to unwind after a packed day at work.

More time to do the things you love

Building structure and consistency into your rituals means more time for the things that bring you joy. This looks different for everyone:

  • Getting up earlier in the morning for your gym session means you have the evening free to say yes to spontaneous plans with friends.
  • Ticking your hobbies off after work, whether that’s heading to the weekly track session or working on your upskill course, means you can use your mornings to relax and ease into the day.
